They wait until the house is fast asleep
Sisters, lurking in the looming dark
One to watch, and one with ears to hark
In case their Daddy wakes, and comes to reap;
They scramble to the closet, burrow deep,
Watching as he hunts them like a shark --
Mindlessly insane, raving, stark --
As terrified, the sisters hug and weep.
Years and years they've hidden in plain sight,
Hid within their dolls and other toys,
Sneaking out to play in dark of night,
Careful not to make a lot of noise,
Lest he punish them with rage and spite,
(If only because they weren't boys.)
